Why Good Strategy Controls Win Us Over

Why Good Strategy Controls Win Us Over

August 7, 2026 · Daniel Fischer

The best strategy idea in the world falls apart if you can't execute it on a small screen. We care about controls a lot, maybe more than most sites, because we've all rage-quit a good game over a bad interface.

The winning pattern we keep seeing is pause-and-command. Let players stop time, issue orders calmly, then watch them play out. Ironvale Siege nails this, and it's a big reason it scored so well with us.

Gestures should be forgiving. If I have to tap a three-pixel unit to select it, something has gone wrong. Good games use generous hit zones and let you cancel actions without penalty.

When you're trying a new strategy game, spend the first ten minutes just learning the controls before judging the depth. Half the games I nearly dismissed clicked once my fingers caught up.
